DEAR SUN SPOTS: I lost a pair of reading glasses on January 4th, either at BJ’s or in the Auburn parking lot. If anyone finds them, please call 897-5458 and leave a message so I can come and pick them up. Thank you Sun Spots for what you are doing. – Tim, Fayette
RESPONNSE: Hope someone handed them over to the customer service counter in the store. Sometimes it’s good to call more than once to follow up.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the recommendations for buying glasses online (December 27 Sun Spots), I had excellent service from eyebuydirect.com. I bought two pairs of progressive lenses, one pair of sunglasses, and another pair of corrective lenses with prisms. My husband also bought bifocals. The frames are very good and the prices were great. – No name, no city
DEAR SUN SPOTS: First off, let me tell you how much we appreciate your column. My sisters and friends look forward to it every day and miss it on the weekends, but we are happy that you have the weekend off.
I am responding to Alicia’s request for a reliable mechanic with Subaru experience.
I would like to recommend a mechanic in Lewiston who has many years of experience on Subarus and other vehicles.
He can be reached at 212-2882. Please leave a message if there is no response as it might be busy working. He will get back to you.
RESPONNSE: Excellent! So many people depend on these recommendations from readers. I am very happy to spread the word!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: What kind of outdoor group activities are happening in Androscoggin County? I would love to go out and meet new people, but I would like to limit my time in indoor public places due to the pandemic. I am particularly interested in volunteer opportunities. – No name, no city
RESPONNSE: For volunteer opportunities, check out 211 Maine. Just call 211 or visit the website (https://211maine.org/) where you’ll find lists of nonprofits you can contact and chat with to see if your interests and schedule match their needs.
Other ideas that come to mind include contacting Lewiston and Auburn Recreation Services to see if they have any outdoor opportunities such as watching rinks or toboggan runs, working with a group to clean trails or collect garbage in parks.
How about being the big sister of a young girl who needs a friend and a mentor? It’s not necessarily a group activity, but you could meet other Big Sisters and their companions for a fun day of skating, sledding, hiking, or just having a hot chocolate together and enjoying a winter view. Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine Androscoggin (https://www.bbbsmidmaine.org/, 653-3857).
Do you like to drive? It is necessary to deliver books or meals to those confined to the house. Lewiston Housing Authority (https://lewistonhousing.org/) is looking for volunteer delivery drivers. To find out about book delivery options, contact your community library.
If you love birds and animals, contact the Audubon Society in Falmouth (https://maineaudubon.org/) to see what you can help, or contact a local animal shelter to see if they need dog walkers.
Not a volunteer idea, but have you heard of Meet-up (https://www.meetup.com/cities/us/me/lewiston/)? There are many opportunities suitable for many different interests. Check it out!
